We have landed in Naples so many times, and each one tried a different way to get to the city centre. There is no one way better than the other, just the one that suits you best.
It mostly depends on whether you want to drag bags around, for the best comfort, or have a very long flight. This guide will help you get from Naples airport to the city centre without any hassle and without getting ripped off by a taxi driver.

Naples Airport Basics: What to expect when you land
Let’s start by reassuring you, Naples airport isn’t big, has only one terminal and the arrival hall, gets you directly into the chaotic city (You’ll soon love it, believe us!). Sometimes, having a small airport is a blessing.
The facilities are about 4 miles (7 KM) away from the historic centre. So if you have your accommodation in Naples city centre, you are just about 20 minutes away by car. Accounting for traffic in peak hours is madness.
When you walk out of the airport, the first thing you’ll find is the taxi stand, or queue corridor. Walking past it, crossing the road, and keeping right. This is the side where passengers are allowed to stop and go.
If you keep walking, you’ll find the first public transport. The collective (shared) taxi – €5 to the main train station, or maritime station. If you keep walking, you’ll find the queue for the Alibus. This is, by now (2025), the only public transport at the International Airport of Naples.
This is basic information that will keep you serene for your next trip to Naples. Keep reading for more information about each individual option, including prices.

Public Bus: The Budget-Friendly Option from Naples Airport to City Centre
Every time we plan a trip back to Naples, our very first choice is almost always the bus. It’s the cheapest, reliable and worry free option. It’s also possible to book online, skip the line, and be ready at your arrival.
We boarded the bus with hand luggage, and it was fine, even though it was quite squeezed. It’s called Alibus, you can’t get wrong.
You can spot it easily just outside the airport terminal, as you walk to the main road. The shuttle bus runs frequently—every 15 to 20 minutes usually—and takes you directly to Piazza Garibaldi, which is right next to Naples Central Train Station in the city centre. From there, you can walk or hop on local buses or the metro.
Tickets cost about €5 per person one way, and you can buy them on board (cash only – remember your coins) or reserve online HERE!
The ride on the Alibus takes about 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic. We found it reliable and not too cramped, but be prepared for rush hour when it can get busy.

Taxi from Naples Airport to the City Centre
Taxis in Italy aren’t the cheapest ones, and there is no Uber in Naples. Surely taking a private taxi is convenient and quicker, but not for everyone.
Official taxis line up outside the terminal, but beware: Naples taxi rules can be a bit of a jungle if you don’t know what you’re doing. The fixed fare from Naples Airport to the city centre is around €22-€25. However, we suggest asking the driver before hopping. Insist with the driver to use the meter or stick to the flat rate. It’s not unusual to hear stories about tourists ripped off by taxi drivers in Naples.
Travel time is about 15-20 minutes, but Naples traffic can sometimes stretch this. The ride itself is generally fine, but don’t be surprised if the driver dons a bit of a race car driver persona in dense city streets.
Generally speaking, if you are up for a taxi ride and sharing with your friends is great. However, if you are a couple, think about booking a private transfer, which is quicker, waiting for you at the arrival, and you’ll avoid standing in line for longer when landing.
Private Transfers and Shared Shuttles: For Peace of Mind
If you want to skip all the guesswork, booking a private transfer or shared shuttle beforehand is a solid option. We tried one on a recent trip and it felt like a VIP welcome to the city. Even though we spent only €5 each. Just a little waiting for it to fill the 8 seats, and we were good to go on the road. No waiting, no surprises. This works cash only, and they also take USD, as far as we saw with two Americans who just arrived.
Instead, if you are going on the Amalfi Coast or Sorrento, we suggest booking a shared shuttle transfer in advance. These get very busy and booked in advance. Check this shuttle.
Metro: Not yet ready
The metro from Naples city centre to the Airport is a dream for travellers and locals. It’s not yet completed, but set to be ready in a few months.
At the moment, you must reach Naples Piazza Garibaldi, the city’s main train station, to access the Metro system. From there you can easily get to Piazza Dante (where most of the B&Bs are located), Sanita District, Spanish Quarter or Mergellina (Naples Promenade).
Renting a Car at Naples Airport
We know driving in Italy can be one of the best experiences ever, but Naples is something else. If you plan to head out of town after arrival or explore the coast, renting a car might be tempting.
Renting a car at Naples airport is very easy, and there are budget options too. Actually, one of the recent cars we rented had a desk outside the terminal. We had a staff member pick us up at the arrival, and drive 5 minutes. It was hassle-free and the rental was one of the smoothest we had in ages.
To be fair, rent a car only if you are getting away from the Naples city centre. Parking and driving are a nightmare if you are not used to that. We suggest comparing options on Discover Cars, which offers great deals if you book in advance.

Final Tips from Our Experience
- Bring cash for buses and small purchases. Don’t rely only on cards at the airport kiosk or on buses.
- Watch your bags on the bus and in the station. Naples is safe for tourists, but the odd pickpocket is a reality.
- Book transfers ahead if you want peace of mind. It’s a small price for a smooth start.
- Travel light if using public transport. Wheeled suitcases are best, but be ready to lift on some steps. By the way, Alibus is accessible too.
- If arriving late at night, taxis or pre-booked transfers are your best options. The buses stop running around midnight.
Landing in Naples is exciting, and how you get from the airport to the city centre can set the tone. Take it from us: for a good mix of cost and convenience, the Alibus shuttle is your main ally. For comfort and ease, book a shuttle or taxi.
